It was about to come, we all knew. News houses were reday with their data and archives. In november apex court kept its ruling reserved. Now today supreme court five judge bench with 4-1 majority ruled in favour of cast based reservation in educational institutions. It is not clear wether it will apply from 2008-09 session or not, but it is very likely to. Times of India reports:
The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld 27 per cent reservations for the OBCs in central educational institutions while declaring that creamy layer (among OBCs) should be excluded from the quota.
The Court also said that reservations should not be in perpetuity but should be revised in periods.
The apex court had reserved its judgment in November last year after a marathon four-month-long hearing.
Reservation is always a bloggers darling. They keep giving their opinion solicited or otherwise. Hey quota is killing merit or similar stuff. So this ruling with OBC reservation is central educational instituions including IITs, IIMs and the University where I teach, DU. So we are going to be served with heated debates in days to come. To begin with please look at this post by mantosh.
Aalok Tomar consider this decision as the big victory for Arjun Singh.
